Information about Costs or Funding of an Apprentice:

Apprenticeships are high on the Governments skills agenda, the main priority is to help train and develop young people to help close skills gaps and develop the workforce of the future.

16 to 18 years

16–18 year olds on apprenticeships are fully funded. This means that the employer does not have to pay for the cost of the training/qualifications delivered by Telford College towards the apprenticeship components.

Over 19 years old

19+ year olds on an apprenticeship are co-funded by the employer. This means that the employer is expected to pay a contribution towards the cost of the training/qualifications delivered by Telford College towards the apprenticeship components.

All employers would need to pay the costs of the apprentice's wage. Having an apprentice is a valuable asset to any organisation as they take on the roles and responsibilities of a 'real' job.

What training will be provided and how?

On a 1:1 basis, an assessor from Telford College will work with the apprentice(s) in the workplace towards a nationally recognised qualification. The qualifications will include:

Diagram of Application Framework including Practical competance, Technical Certificate, (knowledge) Transferrable skills, employment rights and responsibilities and finally Personal learning and thinking skills

There is an expectation that employers will provide the on site training regarding the job role and support the programme to ensure apprentices are fully trained to the organisations needs as well as the requirement for the Apprenticeship programme.

What is the duration of an Apprenticeship Programme?

The majority of apprenticeships take between 9–12 months, depending on the subject area. You can access this information about the duration by looking at the apprenticeship brochure for each area.

What employment right, status and pay will the apprentices have?

  • All recruited apprentices need to have a fixed term contract or employed status and will need to be issued with a written contract on commencement of employment; they would have the same rights as all employed persons within your organisation in line with their contract.
  • An agreement is also made between Telford College, the apprentice(s) and the employer regarding the development of the individual.
  • The apprentice will be employed for a minimum of 30 – 40 hours per week, and paid for any off the job training required as part of their apprenticeship.
  • An employer initially pays £2.60 per hour to learners aged 16–18 years and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their first apprenticeship.
  • If the apprentice reaches 19 and has completed the first year of the apprenticeship the employer needs to pay the apprentice at least the full NMW for their age. The employer normally agrees a progression payment/route by the time they achieve the apprenticeship.
