
This course is aimed at highly motivated, mature young people who would like to learn more and hopefully pursue a career in the motor vehicle trade.
You will develop practical skills through a minimum of seven core units which are: Health and Safety, Tools Equipment, Engine Systems, Spark Ignition Systems, Cooling/lubrication, Steering/Suspension, Brakes, Wheels, Tyres and Exhausts.
To gain the Diploma students would need to complete 3 additional units in Spark Ignition Fuel Systems, Compression Ignition Fuel Systems, Spark Ignition System Maintenance. The work you complete as part of these units will go to compile a portfolio of evidence.
The Certificate is equivalent to three GCSEs grade DG.
You can progress onto Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance Repair Light Vehicle or BTEC 1st Diploma in Engineering.
Course Description
1.6 million people work in jobs which are linked to engineering in some way, for example in the electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, energy, aerospace, entertainment, architecture, civil engineering, bio-medical, computing and design industries. The knowledge and skills you will develop on Level 1 Principal Learning in Engineering are a basis for interesting careers in these and many other fields. You could progress from this course to further study, training or work in business or industry.
You will learn through carrying out practical real-life projects and investigations and you will spend time in an industrial environment. (Personal protective equipment will be needed.) Topics studied will include: communications, computer aided engineering, maintenance, electronic construction and testing, introduction to the engineering world and engineering the future. You will also develop your investigative, communication, presentation and project management skills.
This qualification is equivalent to three GCSEs grade DG and the Project qualification is equivalent to half a GCSE grade DG.
You can go on to a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering or Construction Technology. You may also work and study as an apprentice.
