NVQ and Certificate in Beauty Therapy/NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing

Course Description:

You will spend one year studying the NVQ Level 1 Hair Certificate and one year studying Beauty Therapy. The course prepares you to enter the hair and beauty industry. Study will include a wide range of hair and beauty treatments including facials, manicures, blow drying and setting. You will study the anatomy and physiology related to each treatment. You will also study health and safety in the workplace, employment skills and reception. You will be required to sit an examination in order to pass this course.


These qualifications are equivalent to four GCSEs grade D–G.

Entry Requirements:

  • KS3 Levels 3/4
  • Excellent school Attendance
  • Good tutor/school report
  • Successful interview

Further Study:

Level 2 NVQ/Diploma in Nail Services, Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing, or Hairdressing Apprenticeship.
Principal Learning in Hair and Beauty Studies and Project.

Course Description:

This is a 2 year course studied over one extended day a week away from school. It is a combination of theoretical and practical learning applied in a work setting. The course goes beyond the practical aspects of Hair and Beauty and explores the business and commercial aspects of the industry.

At Level 2 you will study:

  • The World and Science of Hair and Beauty

  • Promotion
  • Business Systems
  • Exploring Skin Care and Make up
  • Hair Styling
  • Exploring Hand Care and Nail Art

Additional and Specialist Learning can be accessed in our three luxurious training salons within Telford College, Wolverhampton College and County Training. Work will be graded by external examination and internal assessment (teacher assessment). Assessment will take a variety of forms and include assignments, portfolios, tests, demonstrations and practical work.


This qualification is equivalent to five GCSEs grade A*–C and the Project qualification is equivalent to half a GCSE grade A*–C.

Entry Requirements:

  • Minimum Key Stage 3 Levels 5/6 in English, Mathematics and ICT
  • School recommendation
  • Interview and showing a high level of interest in working in this area
