Level 1 Course:

Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Light Vehicle Level 1)

This programme is for students with a keen interest in motor vehicles and who would like to eventually work in the retail motor industry in vehicle maintenance and repair. The course also develops functional skills in literacy and numeracy.

The units covered by Light Vehicle Level 1, may include:

  • Engine technology, Chassis systems
  • Wheels and tyres, Exhaust systems = Electrical technology
  • Practical workshop sessions on cars and components

Other learning opportunities include:

  • A supplementary enrichment programme including sports activities, visits to motor manufacturers and exhibitions

Duration:

1 year – Full–time

Further study:

On successful completion of the IMI Technical Diploma in Automotive Studies you can progress onto the Level 2 in Automotive Studies.

Level 2 Automobile Maintenance and Repair

This course is for students who have successfully completed the Level 1 Award


On this course you will gain all the practical skills you need in the realistic working environment of our well–equipped workshops


In addition to covering all of the content delivered on the Fast Fit Level 2, this course also involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:

  • Working in the Engineering field and is widely recognised across a range of disciplines
  • Carrying out routine vehicle maintenance
  • Removing and replacing engine units and components
  • Electrical auxiliary units and components
  • Chassis units and components

You will also have the opportunity to learn Key Skills in:

  • Communication, Application of Numbers
  • A supplementary enrichment programme including sports activities, visits to motor manufacturers and exhibitions

Assessment:

  • Observation of practical work
  • Written Assessments
  • Oral Assesment
  • On-Line examinations

Duration:

1 year, full–time study

Further Study:

On successful completion of the IMI Technical Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies you can progress onto the IMI National Diploma in Automotive Studies.

Level 3, Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

This Level 3 qualification covers the technical needs for today's motor vehicle repair industry, including the diagnosis of complex system faults and advanced systems operation

It provides the essential knowledge for diagnostic technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots

It is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:

  • Diagnosis and rectification of Engine and component faults
  • Chassis system faults = Auxiliary electrical equipment faults
  • Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage

Duration:

One year, full time study

Assessment:

  • Observation of practical work
  • Written Assessments
  • Oral Assesment
  • On–Line examinations

Further Study:

On successful completion of this qualification you could progress to employment as a Qualified Diagnostic Technician or similar role
