Fujitsu Apprenticeships Reap Rewards http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#60 One of the world leaders in IT solutions, Fujitsu, are reaping the rewards of an apprenticeship programme they implemented just twelve months ago. The Japanese company have a big presence in the UK employing around 10,000 people and have made apprenticeships a key part of their recruitment strategy.

Barbara Boland, Resource Manager with Fujitsu, takes up the story. “We commenced an initiative to create an effective educational and development programme to provide opportunities for the youth of today. Supporting and linking in to the government apprenticeship scheme suited the needs of the business perfectly and coupled with Fujitsu internal training has enabled us to offer employment and career opportunities in our local communities”.

Telford College are partnering Fujitsu in this initiative. The College have supported Fujitsu in the recruitment process, module selection and on-going work place assessment. According to Barbara it is a partnership that is working well “The College have provided a high level of student candidates for the twelve month placements as well as cutting edge support throughout the whole apprenticeship process”.

Two of the beneficiaries of the Fujitsu initiative are Saul Millhouse and Kirk Hay who joined the company as apprentices earlier in the year. Both are working in key areas of the business. Kirk is employed within the enterprise management team and has a responsibility for monitoring close on eighty thousand servers throughout the UK.

“It is a great role, with plenty of responsibility and huge opportunities for learning new skills” enthused Kirk. “I had been unemployed when I decided to register an interest with Telford College for an apprenticeship placement. They could not have been more helpful and was delighted to be put forward for an interview with Fujitsu”.

Saul is training as a computer technician within the systems support team and was just as pleased to be selected for an interview. “The interview process was not as daunting as I thought it may be, in fact it was very informal! They certainly made it clear that they were not concerned so much in our technical skills, although obviously very important, but our attitude, people skills and flexibility to fit into the Fujitsu way of working”.

As part of the apprenticeship Kirk and Saul are undertaking a College based computer course to gain formal qualifications. Both have been stimulated by their experiences and are keen to make a professional impression. Saul’s ambition is “to excel in the company by making the most of the opportunity and learning as much as possible”. Kirk feels it is the perfect learning environment. “We face new challenges everyday and you can’t help but gain more knowledge and develop new skills. Fujitsu are giving chances to young people and they deserve a lot of credit for it”.

Barbara has seen the clear benefits the apprenticeship programme has delivered and how it promises to do so for the future. “The apprentices have adopted an extremely positive and proactive approach to their knowledge drive. They have seamlessly fitted into the business and commenced their training with a productive passion. They are now joining me in enhancing and defining the on-going programme by using their experience to improve our current apprenticeship processes”.

Fujitsu offers various kinds of apprenticeships ensuring a profound education highly adapted to each occupational profile. The combination of theory and practical exercises guarantees an outstanding and intensive education. The areas of business Fujitsu apprenticeships are available in are:

Application Services; Design and Development; Engineering Services; Network and Data Centres; Programme and Project Management; Retail Products Group; Service Desks; Sourcing and Supply Services; System Operations; Test and Integration.

Telford Students Master The Art of Breadmaking http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#61 Students from Telford College of Arts and Technology learnt all about bread when they were visited by regional family baker Roberts Bakery.

Roberts Bakery, which makes 80 million loaves a year and supplies bread to convenience stores and supermarkets throughout the region, talked to the students about how bread is made and how it can form part of a healthy lifestyle. The students then rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in to making some delicious bread of their own. The students were involved in every stage of the breadmaking process, from weighing out the ingredients accurately and kneading the dough to the correct consistency to allowing it to rest before it goes in the oven.

The visit from Roberts formed part of a kitchen confidence module in an accredited course for the students who have a range of special learning needs. The course aims to equip the students with practical skills that will help them to live independently in the community.

Pam Mundy, catering lecturer at Telford College of Arts and Technology, said: “Our courses are all about relevance to life. This visit from Roberts Bakery was very valuable in underlining the importance of healthy living and it gave the students new skills and ideas to help them gain more independence. They thoroughly enjoyed baking the bread, which was great fun and really helped them to understand that just a few ingredients can make a delicious loaf.”

Keith Birkett of Roberts Bakery added: “This was a great visit and it’s so rewarding to play a role in this interesting and relevant course topic. The students obviously got a lot out of the sessions and really enjoyed making and, more importantly, tasting the bread that they had made themselves.”

Celebrating 125 years of baking bread, independent bakery Roberts Bakery was established in 1887. The company has operated from its current premises in Northwich, Cheshire since 1952. The site is kitted out with state-of-the art equipment, which enables the company to produce 1.5 million consistently high quality loaves a week. For four generations, the Roberts family has continued the skilled tradition of baking fine bread, with many members of the Roberts family still actively working for the business.

Creator Chris Leads Class to Success http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#59 It has been quite a year for Telford College full-time student Chris Rowe. Twelve months ago 25 year old Chris from Cross Houses was struggling to stay motivated in his job at a well known supermarket. Now he is on the brink of straight distinctions in his Level 3 Software Development course and about to enter higher education.

Chris recently told the news team what lead him to Telford College: “I’d worked in the supermarket for five years but was starting to get frustrated and lacked focus. I was just not happy and wanted a change. I knew I had more to offer”. A computer enthusiast, Chris had learnt elements of programming (all self-taught) developing a couple of games and some web applications. “I really wanted to work in the computer industry, but without experience and qualifications I didn’t really stand a chance. So I made the big decision to pack in my full-time job and go to Telford College”.

Since joining the level three course there has been no looking back for Chris. “It was very daunting at first as I was sacrificing a steady income but still had a home and car to run plus bills to pay. But my partner was incredibly supportive and the supermarket very understanding, even offering me a part-time role, which has helped ease the financial burden”

“But the course has been brilliant; it has been a wonderful experience. I’ve learnt so many new skills and has put into context all the time I spent messing around programming at home”. Being slightly more mature than many of his peers Chris has become a role model in the class and has gained just as much satisfaction helping and supporting his fellow students.

Sue Burke, Course Team Leader for Computer Studies, explains “It’s just like having another teacher in the class! Chris is so helpful and has proved to be exceptionally motivational for his peers”.

Apart from learning new skills such as project management and new computer languages, Chris feels so much more confident now and his self-esteem has improved immeasurably. “The teachers have been really supportive, they all have industry experience which I feel makes a huge difference. Everything is explained so clearly and in minute detail, they are always on hand for advice”.

With more and more of the industry turning to mobile applications the current course is reflecting these fast changing trends and during the year Chris has created ‘apps’ for android. A College first! To emphasise this Chris will be studying a brand new HE course at Telford College in conjunction with Stafford University entitled HND in Software Development and Mobile Applications when he resumes his studies next September.

Chris has his heart set in a career creating new gaming software feels the qualifications he gains will be a massive boost. “Employers will not even look at you unless you have good qualifications”

“For anyone wanting to pursue a career in this exciting industry, joining a full-time computing course at Telford College will be a very positive first step and with some hard work and determination will undoubtedly lead to some terrific opportunities”

Enterprising Students in the Spotlight http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#52 ‘Telford College Enterprise Week’, which ran from Monday 30th April until Friday 4th May , saw students and local school children participating in a wide range of activities and tasks as the College promotes the culture of entrepreneurship and innovation.

Ray Soper from the Telford College Business School had a key role in setting up the weeks events and had this to say “In the current economic climate it is vital to encourage a new generation of social and commercial entrepreneurs. They can add value to communities, bring innovation to existing businesses and can create employment for themselves and more importantly for others by using their confidence and ambition”

To provide an outlet to this ambition the programme of events included a ‘Dragons Den’ style competition, a schools ‘Apprentice’ challenge and a range of workshops and seminars focused on business start-up ideas and opportunities. A panel from the local business community presided over pitches and presentations from the student groups participating.

Hoping to catch the imagination of the ‘Dragons’ were business ideas in many different areas including catering, on-line retailing, leisure and sustainability. “We had a great take-up from students and I know they have worked really hard in putting their business plans and presentations together” explained Ray.

Local school children took part in the ‘Apprentice’ challenge which saw teams competing against each other to put together the best marketing campaign relating to the issue of re-cycling. In a race against time the teams were asked to produce a promotional poster and a radio advert to be considered by the panel. A team of Telford College business students were on hand to assist and support as the groups developed their ideas in preparation for the boardroom!

The events were filmed by 7video to produce an Enterprise DVD. The winners of each event received a range of prizes and all participants were fully recognised for their contribution.

Apprentices Raise £300 for Hospital Cancer Unit http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#53 A group of engineering apprentices from Telford College have raised £300 for the Princess Royal Hospital Breast Unit. The twelve maintenance engineers, all aged between 16 and 21 and from every corner of the UK, are employed by Finning (UK) Ltd one of the world’s largest distributors of Caterpillar plant and power systems. During the apprentices five week specialist College course in welding and bench fitting the students manufactured ten garden obelisks.

Tutor Jim Welch takes up the story. “They are a great set of lads who have made excellent progress during their time at Telford College. Unfortunately one of the apprentices has been diagnosed with leukaemia. In a magnificent gesture the group decided towards the end of their course they would like to make the obelisks in support of their colleague and donate the money to a relevant charity”

Once the students had made the obelisks Proteus Switchgear from Stafford Park, who the College has strong links with, kindly offered to powder coat the products to provide an excellent finish. The obelisks were then sold to members of the Telford College community at £30 each and were snapped up in no time by keen gardeners.

It was agreed that the funds raised should go towards the wider College contribution to the PRH Breast Unit through the ‘Simply TCAT Dancing’ event which has topped over £3,000.

Sammy on Fast Track to Success http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#54 Telford College student Sammy Mitchell is reflecting on a life changing twelve months as she is about to successfully complete her full-time course and is now looking forward to a new career in IT. Having commenced the BTEC Level 3 course in Networking last September, the 24 yr old from Muxton has been fast tracked to complete the programme in one academic year instead of two. As a result of her excellent achievements Sammy has been offered a prestigious apprenticeship with Cap Gemini.

But it could have worked out so differently if Sammy had not decided to visit the college last summer. “I was at a bit of a crossroads” admits Sammy. “For one reason or another I left school without any qualifications and had been in a series of dead end jobs leading nowhere, I was determined to change this but didn’t really know how”

“I met with Tom (Chapple) the Telford College careers adviser and we had a long chat about my aspirations. I’d always had an interest in computers but had never really considered it as a career option. We discussed the networking course and it sounded really exciting. He arranged an interview for me”

Sue Burke, Course Team Leader for Computer Studies, takes up the story. “Sammy was very impressive at interview. She was very focused, confident and I explained that essentially it was a two year course but dependent on her progress we could fast track her. Sammy soon showed all the qualities that were necessary for this”.

The networking course, which can lead to careers in well paid roles in the IT sector such as technician, was a step into the unknown for Sammy but a challenge she rose to superbly. “I’ve really enjoyed the course, it’s been so interesting and the teachers have been great. I’ve learnt so much! If you told me eight months ago that I would be able to install a local area network, maintain a computer system and build in security I would not have believed you.”

Earlier this year the opportunity for an apprenticeship arose at Cap Gemini, one of the world leaders in IT solutions. The company have a strong presence in Telford. After succeeding in the first round of the recruitment process Sammy was invited to an assessment day at their local HQ. “I must confess to be being slightly nervous about it as it looked quite daunting. The group of six candidates had to undertake written tests in English and Maths followed by interviews and then a team building exercise. It was very much like the final round in Lord Sugars ‘Apprentice’ TV programme”.

Two weeks later Sammy heard the great news that she had been accepted onto the Cap Gemini apprenticeship programme and commences the twelve month programme in May. So much for those nerves! “Yes it is fantastic to be offered such a wonderful opportunity. To say I’m looking forward to it would be an understatement”.

Before she signs off from her course and takes up her profession Sammy would like to say this to others who may be considering a future in IT. “I’d encourage anyone with an interest in computing to go on the full time course or look at the Software Development programme (also run at Telford College). It is hard work, there is no escaping that, but it is definitely do-able with a bit of determination and self-belief. The support from the teachers and other students has been outstanding and they make the most complicated jargon sound so simple. It really is a course for everyone and it will provide openings to careers, higher education and as you have seen with me, an apprenticeship”.

Pathway to Positive Success http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#55 Telford College is playing a leading role in helping young disengaged people get back on track to regain confidence and gain qualifications. The issue of ‘NEETS’ (the government acronym which is shorthand for young people between the ages of 16-24 who are neither in employment, education or training) has made the national headlines in recent months as youth unemployment reaches unprecedented heights. As a response to this Telford College has embraced a new initiative that gets beneath the rhetoric to help real youngsters find their vocation in life.

Following last year’s successful pilot programme ‘Positive Pathways’ has been working with close on 50 marginalised youngsters at three outreach centres in the local community. Overseeing the project for Telford College is Sam Matthews an experienced lecturer who is clearly very passionate about the project and working with young people. “Many of these youngsters have found adapting to further education or training difficult. Some of the social issues they live with become more of a priority than education. As a result education has taken a back seat and they are not ready for employment with few or no qualifications” Sam explains.

‘Positive Pathways’ has been specifically designed to be delivered flexibly within a relaxed learning environment to help the youngsters feel comfortable in a non-threatening way. A range of courses are covered from Entry Level to Level 2 including subjects such as Confidence Building and Self-Awareness, Healthy Living, Career Preparation, Presentation Skills and Equality and Diversity. At the Ketley centre the group even have their own dedicated garden to work on.

“It’s a varied programme linked together to develop confidence. We have implemented different teaching strategies to manage this, such as discussion lead classes, which have been terrifically empowering to the students” explained Sam.

“I’m really optimistic that we can follow up the good work from the pilot where all the candidates have now been re-introduced to the main College community and many have secured part-time employment too. We have a dedicated passionate team who all want to see the student’s progress” enthused Sam.

17 yr old Miriam is a great example of what can be achieved in a short space of time. Miriam came to the group with anger issues and has found the group help her overcome these anxieties “the staff are amazing as they go an extra mile to help and support everyone”. It has also helped her regain confidence and focus on the future “I love Positive Pathways as it helps take my mind off other things and made me realise that I can achieve what I want and not feel like a loser”

Kita from Shifnal was in what she described as “not a good place in her mind” when she joined the group. Since then Kita has flourished and now feels optimistic about her future. “My confidence has really improved and everyone is very supportive. I’ve also made some great friends, it’s a very happy place!”

Two of the initial pilot group, Haley Rigby and Danielle Norton, now study full time on the Health & Social Care course and have also secured part-time employment. Danielle takes up the story “Sam helped us both find work and made us believe in ourselves that we could actually do it. She also encouraged us to go back to College”. The two students are also set to become ambassadors for Positive Pathways by sharing their experiences with the current group.

Last word to Sam “I’m really proud of what we are doing as everybody deserves a chance to fulfil their potential. I am pleased that the powers that be have recognised the importance of this programme and continue to commit sustainability so the College can play their part in the reduction of NEETS”

Students Produce Video for Mary Portas Pilot http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#56 Creative media students at Telford College have produced a video on behalf of the Telford and Wrekin Council bid to become one of the governments “Portas Pilots”.

The government is acting upon recommendations in a report by Mary Portas last year - that envisioned High Streets as "multi functional and social places bustling with people, services and jobs...which meet the interests and needs of local people."

As part of this, it is running a number of High Street pilots and has invited bids from towns and partnerships to be selected for this.

The bid will be known as Talking Towns, which will focus on making the borough's High Streets worth visiting and ultimately will grow its economy and create jobs.

Telford College were approached by Lucy Corbett, Economic Development Officer at the Council and were asked to help shoot a video production to support the bid which would embrace High Streets in all five Borough Towns - Dawley, Ironbridge, Madeley, Oakengates and Wellington.

Joe Adams, Media Lecturer at Telford College, takes up the story “The students shot and edited the video in one day. It was a very positive piece with the students acting out there parts with a great sense of fun. Overall it was a great day filming and Telford and Wrekin were delighted with the final product”

Student Liam Woodcock who participated in the production enthused “It was great to work on a real project that supports the local community and traders of the town”

Councillor Richard Overton, cabinet member with special responsibility for Borough Towns Development, said: "This is an opportunity to breathe new life into our town centres and I believe we have a high quality bid that stands an excellent chance of being selected as one of the Portas Pilots."

The bid has now been submitted and if successful, will see Telford gets a share of extra resources to invest in High Streets around the borough. Local Government Minister Grant Shapps has been encouraged by the response "I am delighted by the enthusiastic and energetic response from towns up and down the country, as they have used Mary Portas's review as a real catalyst for change to secure the future of their high streets.

Mary Portas said: "The significant work, creative energy and coming together of communities across the country that is evident in films they have made has confirmed my belief that the British public really care about their high streets. I promise to give as much back. We will work to recreate and redefine the British high street and town centre, making them places local communities are proud of."

The successful bids will be announced later in May.

Bra Collection Raises over £200 towards World Record http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#51 More than two hundred bra’s were collected by Telford College for the Princess Royal Hospital Pink Ribbons Breast Care Group as part of a regional campaign to break a world record. Throughout the West Midlands volunteers have been busily collecting old bra’s in an attempt to achieve a 100 mile stretch. With each bra attracting a donation of £1 it’s an ambitious project that has certainly caught the imagination as an innovative and colourful fundraising campaign.

Janet Ellis, Principal of Telford College, was only too happy to hand over the cheque for £207.35 to the group. “It’s a lovely campaign and after I was initially approached by a number of staff who told me about the wonderful work the care group were doing, I had no hesitation in giving it the College backing. The Art department produced an eye catching ‘bra box’ and the vivid pink posters brightened up the campus and certainly raised awareness”

On behalf of the care group treasurer Betty Jenkinson and chair Carole Knight explained that the funds would be going towards a conservatory at the PRH for the use of patients who have been recently diagnosed. “Being told you have breast cancer is an incredibly traumatic experience and the new development will provide a private area in a peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle of the hospital”.

In recent years there have been fantastic breakthroughs in the treatment of breast cancer and the survival rate is incomparable to even twenty years ago. But one in eight women will be affected by breast cancer at some point in their life and it is the fantastic work that volunteers such as Betty and Carole do for patients that make the difference in helping them come through it. Please continue to support them.

If you would like contribute to the Pink Ribbons Breast Care Group or would like more information please call Betty Jenkinson on 01952 586898

Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 8,000 grants worth more than £420m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £520m.

Colin Walker, Assistant Principal at Telford College of Arts and Technology said “The new facility is already attracting national attention with a number of governing bodies booked in to stage high profile events. This together with confirmation last night that AFC Telford have secured their conference status for next season augers well for the future of football in and around Telford”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “This funding is excellent news for the Telford area. Telford College of Arts and Technology and the County FA deserve credit for their hard work in making this happen.”

Mammoth Art Project for Shropshire School Children http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#48 Over the next month up to four hundred school children will participate in one of the most ambitious art projects the county has ever seen. Workshops are now in place for the creativity project connected to the new £46 million Redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury which is due to open in September.

The project is part of South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (SSSFT) to support mental health services and to improve facilities for the forthcoming years. The new Redwoods Centre building will replace Shelton Hospital.

Arts for Health within the Trust are looking at ways of procuring artwork for the new centre and as part of this endeavour are involving children from local schools to be a vital part of an exciting project to create a large number of artworks to be displayed in the new facility. They are being partnered by Speight of the Art (the Mark Speight Foundation) with assistance from Telford College and Shrewsbury College. Both colleges have agreed to provide studio space for the workshops plus artist expertise and student support to develop the artwork for the new Redwoods Centre.

Up to a dozen primary and secondary schools across the county are participating in the workshops, which are to be held between April 16th and May 21st, under the theme of ‘The new Shrewsbury Redwood Centre for Mental Health – A New Dawn in the Year of 2012 Olympiad’.

Oliver Speight from ‘Speight of the Art’ is looking forward to the project “We are privileged to be invited to partner SSSFT along with Telford College and Shrewsbury College, to engage in an exciting 12 school creative workshop extravaganza. Our aim is to encourage an artistic legacy befitting of the new Redwoods Centre. We are indeed grateful for the perceptive opportunity.'

During the workshop days there will be a number of different activities and entertainment for the children to participate including live music and mental health awareness events. Acclaimed portrait artist Oliver Jones will be engaging children in a collaborative centrepiece which all four hundred children will contribute – somehow!

Jessica Kent from Arts for Health enthused “This is a great opportunity for children to ‘get creative’ and also contribute to an important new development – their artwork will make a huge difference to people using the facility. At the same time we hope to contribute strongly to the anti-stigma campaign by engaging with young people to distil some of the myths surrounding mental health and to broaden their understanding of the new centre and the people we are supporting”

A venue and date for the final exhibition is being finalised where all the participating schools will be invited and Oliver Speight will be awarding a variety of prizes. The children’s art will then be on permanent display at the new Redwoods Centre when it opens in September.

Workshop dates:

Monday April 16th, 23rd, 30th and May 14th and 21st – Shrewsbury College

Friday April 20th, 27th, May 4th and 11th – Telford College

In Praise of Stewards http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#44 The dramatic abandonment of Shrewsbury Town’s home match against Port Vale last week due to a fire may have put a dent in the home side promotion charge but the smooth evacuation of the 6,000 fans drew much praise. Overseen by a team of well drilled stewards, all trained and assessed through Telford College, ensured the emergency procedures were implemented immaculately.

The Shrews led 1-0 at the time through a 50th-minute goal from James Collins but, when smoke began billowing out of the East Stand at the Greenhouse Meadow Stadium, the game was swiftly called off.

The first signs that there was a problem came when the floodlights failed in the Roland Wycherley Stand and supporters were evacuated. A stadium announcement was made some 15 minutes later confirming that the game could not go ahead with firefighters attending a serious fire within the control room.

Shrewsbury Town’s Operations Manager Ian Bebbington said: “The stewards did their job well and the supporters thankfully co-operated once they realised the magnitude of the situation. Everyone was a credit to the town”

Dave Matthias, a season ticket holder, said: “The stewards calmly asked people to get a move on. A few minutes later a cloud of smoke rose out of the stand and people realised it was probably more serious than we had initially thought. I was impressed with the orderly fashion of the evacuation.”

Jan Owen, Telford College Spectator Safety Trainer, was at the match carrying out assessments “I was there to witness firsthand the evacuation which showed the stewards were able to perform to exceptionally high standards in a very stressful situation. I was proud to think that the many hours of training had paid off”.

Health and Social Care Students Break Down Barriers http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#46 For many years the Health and Social Care full-time courses have been dominated by female students – with just a handful of males! This year’s intake includes Jordan Furey, Ryan Kelly and Tom Blakemore three male trailblazers who joined the first year BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care programme back in September and are on track to fulfil their professional ambitions.

Jordan is in no doubt of the career path he wants to pursue. “I want to be a Social Worker” the 17 year old from Stirchley told the news team , “ and to do that I need good qualifications”. The BTEC Diploma has been the perfect fit. “I did look at New College, but was absolutely blown away by the Open Day I attended at Telford College. Everywhere here is so modern and the facilities are brilliant. I also found the lecturers full of information and they sold it to me there and then. My first impressions of Telford College were very positive”.

Inspired by his own experience as a personal carer, Ryan sees his future as a physiotherapist. “Over the last couple of years I’ve had a lot of contact with professionals from the health sector and seen what wonderful jobs they are doing in helping people overcome life threatening illness and assisting them back to independent living. It’s a career I’d very much like to pursue”.

The course has so far delivered everything Ryan had expected. “The individual units are really interesting and I’ve especially enjoyed Psychology, Anatomy and Physiology”. Jordan has particularly liked the practical elements to the course “it’s a real hands-on programme, we are given genuine opportunities to put in practice the theoretical side through course work, placements and on-going assessment”

Tom from Shawbirch, a keen Basketball player who has represented the Shropshire Warriors, is also a Police Cadet and it is this experience that has fuelled his ambition to be a paramedic. “I’ve always wanted to help people and this is the direction I want to go. If I’m successful on the course I would like to undertake a two year foundation degree at Worcester University”

The two-year extended Diploma Programme enables students to accumulate UCAS points and gain the equivalent of four A Levels. Caroline Wrelton, a placement officer within the Health and Care team, explains that good results from the qualification will enable progression to University. She has also been very impressed with the progress the three students have made. “They have all been a real credit to the College and demonstrated that this course is for everyone. All three are focused, know what they want and how they are going to achieve it. At the same time they have broken through a lot of misconceptions about Health and Social Care education and we are confident it will open the door for many more male students to follow”.

Final word goes to Jordan. “I would recommend this course to anyone and would not hesitate encouraging more lads to take it up. It’s a great programme full of variety with great opportunities. Don’t be daunted by stereotyping, the health sector can offer great careers for everyone”.

Beauty Spa Introduces Hairdressing http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#42 A successful evening was recently held by Telford College to celebrate the opening of the newly refurbished Lilly’s Hair and Beauty Spa. State of the art facilities and new services to include hairdressing were unveiled to a specially invited audience of close on a hundred local business people, dignitaries and customers who were treated to practical demonstrations and complimentary treatments.

In a venture that is now entering its third year between Telford College and the Whitehouse Hotel, Lilly’s provides Hair and Beauty students’ unique opportunities to develop their skills in a commercial salon while under the supervision of experienced specialists. Salon Manager Donna Brazier says it is a combination that works well. “We have a mixture of Level 2 qualified students and newly qualified Level 3 staff working here at any one time, they could be on placements as part of their College course or gaining work experience once they have completed it. We also have a full-time apprentice and self-employed hair stylists”.

The makeover has enabled the salon to extend its services and cater for more customers. Jo Snookes the Programme Manager for beauty therapy has overseen the growth of the partnership since it was initiated and seen it go from strength to strength. “The venture has proved hugely successful for the College as it enables the students to gain valuable practical experience and progress with confidence to employment around the world. We have had such positive feedback that bookings continue to grow from an ever expanding customer base”.

“The open evening was fantastic as it enabled us to introduce hairdressing and showcase the great work and talent the students and staff are undertaking at Lilly’s. We featured some of our more indulgent therapies such as microdermabrasion, hot stone massage plus threading and henna painting, which were really well received. We also put on an Asian bridal demonstration featuring full traditional costume. It was spectacular.”

Students Look Forward to Island Life http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#41

Four Hair and Beauty students are looking forward to a long hot summer in Jersey having been offered a unique opportunity to work at a five-star hotel on the island. The four students - Tatum Rhodes, Tamlyn Donovan, Brogan Watson and Chantelle Cord – all complete their Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy in the next month before jetting off to the island to take up posts in the award winning Spa at the Grand Jersey Hotel.

The opening arose for the four students following successful work placements and work experience gained at Lilly’s Beauty Spa based at the Whitehouse Hotel. As a result of Telford College’s excellent relationship with the Whitehouse, Jo Snookes, Telford College programme manager for beauty therapy was put in touch with Jane Turner the Spa Manager at the Grand Jersey. “It was really interesting” recounts Jo “as they had heard about our students’ good work at Lilly’s and Jane was looking to recruit new staff for the Grand Jersey Spa. I found out more about their business and how the profiles of our students matched up with their requirements. Jane was really happy with this and asked if we could see if any of our second year students would be interested”.

Following an internal application process the Grand Jersey HR Manager, Andy Dentten, visited Telford College to conduct interviews with four applicants. Andy was so impressed with the calibre of the candidates that he offered all four an invitation to visit the hotel to undertake a practical trade test. With flights sponsored by the airline Flybe the four students spent this Monday and Tuesday in Jersey undergoing a stern examination of their skills. The great news is that all four passed the test with flying colours and have been offered full time posts for the summer season commencing in April.

Andy Dentten had this say “The four students that I had the pleasure of meeting were a credit to the college. Their passion for the subject was fantastic and their enthusiasm suggests they will have a very bright future indeed”

Jo was elated at the news “I’m really pleased as it’s a fantastic opportunity for the girls as they are exceptional students. It’s a great satisfaction for the teaching team to see the students embark on their chosen career path. Hopefully it will be the start of a long and fruitful relationship. I’m certainly looking forward to visiting Jersey later in the year to see how they are progressing”.

For Tatum Rhodes from Dawley it’s a dream come true. “Since I was six I have been really interested in make-up and beauty and the course at Telford College has been brilliant. I can’t wait to start work at the Grand Jersey Hotel, it is so luxurious and I am sure it will be a terrific experience”.

Janet Ellis, Telford College Principal was equally thrilled “This is fantastic news for the four students and the College. It demonstrates the College courses are meeting the skills needs of the business community and I am sure Tatum, Tamlyn, Brogan and Chantelle will be terrific ambassadors”

Siblings Share Young Citizen Award http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#40 There will be no sibling rivalry in the Trickett household as both brother and sister Joe and Megan were awarded the Outstanding Young Citizen award at the seventh annual High Sheriff’s Young Citizenship Awards event at Telford College last night. As these two ran away with the Borough of Telford and Wrekin award, Sarah Barden from Shifnal was the deserved winner for the Shropshire council area.

The awards which recognise the valuable contribution that children and young people make to their communities were presented by the current High Sheriff of Shropshire, Richard Burbidge, OBE DL, BA.

Joe and Megan from Newport are both very talented in the sporting field with Joe a year six pupil at Burton Borough and a member of the West Bromwich Albion football development centre. His younger sister who attends Moorfields Primary School plays for the Stoke City academy. They are also very keen cricketers representing Shropshire at county and district level. Deputy Head teacher at Moorfields, Rosalind Flanders explains it is not just their undoubted sporting prowess that makes them exceptional but the willingness to share their skills to develop others “Joe helped design and develop football training sessions where he quickly established himself as a supportive and exemplary role model, regularly giving up lunchtimes to organise and supervise the courses. Megan has continued the family legacy in the same selfless way as her brother”. Both have also supported Macmillan Cancer Care raising over £900 for the charity and continue to do extraordinary fundraising activities.

Sarah, a student at Idsall Sixth Form Centre, has been involved in a multitude of activities over the last twelve months. Ranging from sports coaching to organising senior citizens Christmas lunches all have a common thread – helping others. In support of Sarah’s nomination Head of Sixth Form John Crimes had this to say “Sarah is an outstanding young lady whose unselfish, altruistic nature has benefitted many. Although her commitments are numerous she has always managed to maintain a high level of academic achievement”

This year more than 100 young people were nominated for an award by schools, colleges and other organisations from across the county. Each received a certificate to recognise there fantastic achievements which included environmental, political and caring projects, as well as many other voluntary community activities.

The awards were initiated by a previous Sherriff, Mike Lowe, who recently stood down as Chair of Governors at Telford College. The spirit in which they were started still serves strong as Richard Burbidge verifies “Tonight has demonstrated there are a lot of remarkable young people who do an immense amount of good for their communities. We all hear so much about young people who cause difficulties in our society and I do hope that the awards and the publicity given to them will help the general public to recognise how much good there is in our younger generation”

Helping People Back to Work http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#37 The Work Club at Telford College, set up twelve months ago, is going from strength to strength as it assists the local unemployed get back into the job market. The group, which meets every Thursday between 9.30 to 12.30 pm, is open to anyone in the local community. It operates as an informal ‘drop-in’ session where support is offered in a wide breadth of areas to help individuals with their job search.

Activities such as CV preparation and interview skills can be conducted in a supportive environment where everyone has the same goals and aspirations. The club helps motivate and inspire, boosts self-esteem and provides opportunities to secure that elusive opening.

It is also an important place to network, share experiences and increase contacts. Did you know that 30% of people who lose their jobs find a new one through informal networks and friends? Only one-in-ten secures a new job through traditional avenues such as applying to advertisements. So joining in with the Work Club clearly increases the chances of finding a new job.

Dave Hatch, a 51 year old Falklands veteran from Hadley, has been unemployed for just over twelve months. He was made redundant having worked for a logistics company on Stafford Park for 15 years, has been attending the Work Club for the last four months. For Dave the main benefit of the Work Club is the networking and support he receives. “It’s great to meet others in the same position, we help each other with CV’s and discuss the various vacancies and how to approach them. Just sharing experiences in the job search boosts confidence. The college staff are fantastic. They care and understand our needs perfectly”.

Dave, a Health and Safety Adviser qualified to NEBOSH level, has applied for many jobs and made the short-list on several occasions. “I’m currently volunteering at the Wrekin Housing Trust one day a week as a tenant auditor conducting quality inspections on properties. So I am keeping active in my profession and remain very optimistic that I will secure something soon”.

At 25 years old Alan Walker from Wellington is still trying to find long term employment having been out of work for six months. Despite leaving school with 5 GCSE’s including Maths and English and an ICT Level 3 qualification, Alan has found it difficult to secure a long term career. “I’ve had many jobs, but they have all been short-term contracts or temporary positions. I’d really like a proper permanent position so I can start planning my future and get my own place to live”. Alan applies for about ten jobs a week and the Work Club has helped him focus his search. “Everyone has been really helpful at the Work Club and I have just completed a six week Level 2 SAGE accounting course at the college which will provide me with some more options”

The SAGE course is one of several ‘Employability’ courses the College offers which are run in conjunction with Job Centre plus. These also include IT and Administration, Customer Service, Care, Welding, Fast Fit, ESOL and a programme for Gym Instructors. A three week Hospitality programme has just started which includes a work placement and guaranteed job interview. Telford College has a close liaison with Job Centre Plus and meet regularly with advisers so that they can advise their clients on which courses are available to meet individual needs.

One of the success stories from the employability programme is 19 year old Jodie Evans from Sutton Hill. She recently completed a short four week Care course and placement. “I absolutely loved it. Apart from the new skills I acquired the course helped me with job applications and interview techniques. It was particularly aimed at the care sector and I was able to practice interviews. Prior to this I really hated the thought of going through an interview but the teachers really boosted my confidence and as a result I have just been offered my first full-time job. I’m thrilled to bits!”.

Telford Royal Navy Recruit Sails Through Training http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#38

A 20 year old Royal Navy recruit from Telford has completed the first stage of his Naval training and is now on course for a career at sea.

Trainee Air Engineering Technician Jamie Sheldon arrived at the gates of HMS Raleigh in Cornwall last December and has now undergone 10 weeks of intensive training designed to teach recruits the basic skills required by all sailors. The course culminates with the passing-out-parade attended by families and friends.

The former pupil of The Burton Borough School also studied at Telford College of Arts and Technology where he started a Level 2 Public Services course after finishing his GCSE’s at school. After completing the Level 2 he decided to stay on at the College to complete his Level 3 whilst preparing to apply to join the Royal Navy. On his course, Jamie took part in lessons which included Physical Fitness Training, Leadership and Teamwork Skills and Expedition Training. He was also taught the roles and responsibilities of a range of Public Services and, once he decided on the Royal Navy, he was supported through the application and selection process.

Once his Naval Training began, Jamie was selected as the class leader at the beginning of the course and his duties included taking charge of the class in the absence of their instructor. He said: “I joined the Royal Navy to travel the world doing the job that I will enjoy day in day out. I also wanted to serve my Country and have a career with great promotion possibilities. Training has been a big challenge, but the sense of achievement at the end of every day has pushed me along. I’ve enjoyed the military fitness, the drill training, meeting new people and becoming the class leader. My ambitions are to complete training and then later in my career gain promotion to be a commissioned Officer.”

The Public Services staff at the College and Principal Janet Ellis said “We are very proud of Jamie and all that he has accomplished. The Public Services programme that he studied has served him well and was a great platform for his future career!”

With the first phase of his training complete Jamie’s next port of call is HMS Sultan in Hampshire. There he will learn how to carry out scheduled maintenance as well as pre – and post-flight servicing and inspections for the Fleet Air Arm’s helicopters.

The Royal Navy’s Initial Naval Training course is underpinned by nine Core Maritime Skills that are the foundations of naval life and underpin operational effectiveness. Recruits are taught the basics of Naval discipline and customs. They learn about navigation and are given the chance to take the helm of their own medium sized inflatable boat during a waterborne orienteering exercise. With Royal Navy personnel playing a vital role in Afghanistan and other land-based operations, recruits undergo training in basic combat skills which includes survival in the field. Fitness is a key component of the training and is delivered using a disciplined method of military fitness which focuses on developing co-ordination and individual physical strength and endurance. As the course progresses the recruits take part in three extended exercises to test their skills and understanding of the principles they have been taught.

Details of career opportunities within the Royal Navy are available online at www.royalnavy.mod.uk

Over 100 in contention for Young Citizen of the Year 2012 http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#39 Telford College hosts the seventh annual High Sheriff’s Young Citizenship Awards on Tuesday March 27 which recognise the valuable contribution that children and young people make to their communities. The awards will be presented by the current High Sheriff of Shropshire, Richard Burbidge, OBE, DL, BA.

This year more than 100 young people who have been nominated for an award by schools, colleges and other organisations from across the county. The nominations demonstrate the great variety of activities and events in which young people are involved, such as environmental, political and caring projects, as well as many other voluntary community activities.

The nominees range from very young primary school pupils to students studying further education and represent twenty six educational establishments. Each and everyone has an amazing story to tell about their contribution to their local Shropshire communities. Take for example the seventeen students at Thomas Adams School in Wem who have formed a Community Partnership project with the Wem Baptist Church and spend time supporting pensioners with day-to-day activities such as gardening and regular visits to offer friendship to those in nursing homes. All have been nominated for an award.

Then there are individual feats such as Telford College student Gemma Strong. A fervent anti- bullying campaigner Gemma sits on the Student Council and through her work placements has become involved in working with those struggling with drug addiction and helping those in residential care. Like many of the others nominated Gemma is also a keen fundraiser for charitable causes.

All the young people nominated for an award will receive a certificate and there will be a special award for the two most outstanding young citizens - one from within the Shropshire Council area and the other from within the Borough of Telford and Wrekin.

A Cut above the Rest http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#35 Full-time Telford College student Rebecca Morris, from Bridgnorth, is celebrating after reaching the finals of a national hairdressing competition. Xposure 2012, sponsored by Wella, offers hairdressing students nationwide the opportunity to compete against other students from over three hundred colleges and private training providers.

“As a Mum of three young children I never expected this to happen. When the winners were announced I was in total shock!” Rebecca recently told College Principal, Janet Ellis, as she was congratulated on her achievement.

Rebecca was one of five winners from the regional finals held at Walsall College on 1 March. She now goes forward to the national finals at Wella’s London based HQ in June. Nicki Longden, programme manager for hairdressing who accompanied Rebecca takes up the story: “This is fantastic for Rebecca as she has been outstanding all year. Her enthusiasm is infectious and she has put in a huge amount of work in her own time to get this far”

As a first year Level 2 student on the fast track 19 plus programme Rebecca competed against Level 3 students both internally and externally. Nicki continues “We staged an in-house competition to determine the five entrants we would put forward to the regional finals. It was judged independently by a local salon proprietor. After submitting photographic entries showing their creative cut and colour skills we then received the great news that Rebecca had got through”.

At the regional finals Rebecca had to dress her model, fellow student Melissa Austin with a ‘full look’ which included a cut with a stunning silver/purple colour plus make-up and clothes. Rebecca also had to produce a mood board which documented her ideas and inspiration. Following a practical demonstration of her style and finish Rebecca was quizzed by the judging panel which included celebrity hairdresser Michelle Thompson.

Rebecca clearly impressed the team of industry experts and explains how she felt , “Funnily enough I felt really relaxed in front of them and totally in the zone. It was only after I became emotional and Nicki, who has been such a great teacher and support, literally had to drag me up to collect my winners certificate, I just couldn’t believe it!”.

As Rebecca now prepares for the finals Janet Ellis was full of praise “We are all extremely proud of Rebecca, it is such a wonderful experience for students to participate in events like this. It is also a great reflection on the group and demonstrates the high standards Nicki and her team are achieving”.

Telford College Supports Fairtrade Fortnight http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#32 The Fairtrade Foundation today launches its annual Fairtrade Fortnight campaign (27 February to 11 March 2012) with news that sales continue to outperform overall commercial trends with double digit growth in 2011, and look set to grow further in 2012 as businesses continue to expand and deepen commitments to Fairtrade’s model of ethical sourcing.

Estimated retail sales of Fairtrade products in 2011 reached £1.32bn, a 12% increase on sales of £1.17bn in 2011. Cocoa and sugar have all seen significant growth at respectively 34% and 21% increase over 2010. Bananas, coffee, tea are all showing steady growth. Critically, this means that Fairtrade Premiums, the extra that producers receive for business or social development, increased by over 10% in 2011 compared with 2010.

The theme for 2012’s campaign is Take A Step for Fairtrade, and a new briefing, launched this week, reveals that it is in the sugar and confectionery industry that businesses are stepping up more than ever to meet sustainability challenges, and deliver a better deal for small-scale farmers and workers, and enable them to take their own steps towards a better future.

‘Fairtrade is an example of responsible capitalism in action. We believe that responsible businesses are those who don’t just tackle the company bonuses at the top – but take steps to ensure a fairer deal for the workers and farmers at the bottom of the supply chain too,’ says Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation. ‘The commercial reality is that forward-thinking companies are showing leadership in committing to Fairtrade, realising that, as well as it being the right thing to do, they need to invest in smallholders, developing better, longer-term relationships, to ensure the future supply of commodities like cocoa, coffee, sugar, tea, fruit and more.’

A stall selling Fairtrade products, situated outside the LRC, will enable students and staff to buy everything from Fairtrade chocolate to Fairtrade pants! There are also on-line quizzes and promotional presentations for students to participate in. Anybody interested in setting up a Fairtrade steering group in College should contact Tanveer Mohamed on extension 2388 or email tanveer.mohamed@tcat.ac.uk for more information on how you can help. http://www.fairtrade.org.uk

College Recognised for Poppy Appeal http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#25 Telford College was recently awarded a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ by the Royal British Legion for its magnificent effort in raising £3,165 through the Poppy Appeal last October / November.

Organised by Terry Anslow from CDT with sterling help from Jeanette Twistleton and Monica Summers the total was arrived at from contributions by both staff across the college and students from the Spectator Safety and Security courses which are delivered by Terry.

The Royal British legion is one of the most foremost charities in the country helping serving and ex-Service personnel and their families. Not just those who fought in the two World Wars, but also those involved in the many conflicts since 1945 and those still fighting today. This involves providing practical care, support and advice to the Armed Forces community.

The Legion spent over £114 million on its work in 2010 with £1.4 million a week going towards health and welfare support to Service people young and old, and their families. It is the major voice for Service and ex-Service people throughout the year campaigning on a wide range of issues, including compensation, mental and physical health, housing and homelessness, employment, community and adult care, disability, skills development and debt. Since 2003 they have provided financial help to over 10,000 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan operations - and are investing £50 million in Personnel Recovery Centres and the Battle Back Centre to care for the wounded of current conflicts.

Did you know that more than 30 million Remembrance poppies, 5 million remembrance petals, 100,000 wreaths and sprays, 750,000 Remembrance Crosses and other Remembrance items are made at the Poppy Factory in Richmond, Surrey each year? Amazing!

Congratulations to you all who contributed to such a worthy cause and we look forward to a record breaking year in 2012.

Team 19 update at Telford College http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#27 Last week Team 19 at Telford College commenced their 8’s league which has been set up to deal with the growing interest from students to play larger sided football matches.

This follows in the footsteps of the recently established five-a-side leagues which operates 25 male teams and 4 female teams during lunchtimes. As you can see it has proved to be a very popular cross college event.

Team 19 is a national initiative backed by the Football Association, British Colleges Sport (BCS) and Sport England and the official launch was held here at Telford College in November. Team 19 has been developed as a long term plan to engage 16 to 19 year olds with an interest in football to get involved at a recreational level to increase overall national participation and to create a 1,000 new teams across the country throughout the network of Colleges, Universities and Sixth Forms.

The driving force behind this initiative at the College is Lewis Taylor, the College and Community Football Co-ordinator who explains how the leagues are organised, “The beauty of Team 19 is that it is run by the students for the students. A student management team is in place to referee games, arrange fixtures, collate results and promote Team 19 internally to other students”.

Team 19 also has an interactive element with a national website containing results, league tables statistics and an opportunity to communicate with other colleges across the country.

The student management team is linked into the FA Football Futures programme and offers young leaders the chance to develop a wide range of skills from refereeing to coaching.

For further information please contact Lewis Taylor by e-mail lewis.taylor@tcat.ac.uk

Mike Lowe CBE, DL Steps Down After 13 Years Service http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#24 Mike Lowe CBE, DL stepped down as Chair of the Corporation at the final Corporation meeting of 2011 on Monday 12 December and was surprised to find himself amongst a large group of friends and colleagues when at the end of the meeting he was ushered to Rendezvous the College’s new social area where a celebratory meal had been laid on for him to celebrate.

Mike became a governor of Telford College of Arts and Technology in 1976 and went on to become Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Finance and General Purposes Committee in 1998.

Mike was singled out for all his outstanding ‘service to education, training and business support’ by being awarded a CBE in the 2001 New Years Honours List.

Mike’s immense contributions in the business, educational and voluntary sectors really make him stand out from the crowd, he combines those rare qualities of tact and affability with an energy and steely determination to see projects come to fruition.

With more than 30 years as a magistrate, Mike has often had to deal with the failings of some young people but he remains convinced that the vast majority are never praised enough for all the good work they do in our society. In 2005-06, Mike stepped down as a magistrate to become the High Sheriff of Shropshire, a perfect post to undertake to enable him to introduce High Sheriff Citizenship Awards which were introduced to all the schools in Shropshire to celebrate all the outstanding work that young people do in their communities. The awards were well received and at the end of his term of office, 40 young people received awards for their determination, contributions and selfless attitudes in making life better for others, these awards continue to be awarded year on year by the Community Foundation for Shropshire of which Mike was the Chairman.

In 2006, Mike also took on the role of Chairman of the Dawley Regeneration Partnership, having worked in the town for over 40 years, Mike has a fondness for Dawley and its people.

Janet Ellis, Principal and Chief Executive of Telford College comments, “I have enjoyed working with Mike enormously over the years. In my previous roles at College, Mike as Chair of Governors has always been interested in our students and heir achievements. Of his many duties he has performed, awarding students certificates and special honours has always been the highlight of his role. He has sponsored a Citizenship Award for many years and has been delighted at the level of student participation in rewarding and challenging projects. He has always been keen to expose the many talents of our young people and support them on their journey to employment or further training and education.

He has given me unstinting support in my roles as vice Principal and more recently as Principal and has, along, with the corporation members, given valuable advice and steer in these challenging economic times. Mike will continue as a member of the Corporation and will continue his interests in the skills and talents of our young people through a wide range of community projects”.

Former College Principal Doug Boynton said, "I had the privilege of working in partnership with Mike for the whole of my 21 years as Principal of Telford College for the last 12 years as my Chairman.

Mike is a unique individual and highly successful businessman in his own right and a former High Sheriff of Shropshire Mike has given so much to Telford College for over 25 years. He helped guide the College through many difficult challenges and a major multi million pound investment programme. He has been a constant source of sound counsel and wisdom on so many issues.

He always encouraged us to be businesslike in our approach. Never to simply avoid risk but to analyse the risks and produce a business plan that enabled the college to take the most of the opportunities that were available. His personal qualities are evident to everyone who knows him, warm and sympathetic with an analytical brain and very generous with his time for things that he believes will do the community good. I was extremely fortunate to have him as my mentor and friend for so many years. His contribution to the college achievements should never be underestimated"

Mike to this day feels passionate about the people of Shropshire focusing positively on young people and their achievements in all areas, it is important to him and it reveals a lot about the man who is Mike Lowe, a man who has devoted his life to voluntary service to the people of Dawley, Telford and Shropshire.

Local People Set for Major Sporting Boost in February http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#20 Local people in the Telford area are set for a major sporting boost when the brand new full size third generation (3G) floodlit synthetic grass football pitch opens on completion in February 2012 at Telford College of Arts and Technology following a cash injection of £200,000 from the Football Foundation.

When it is finished the new pitch will allow Telford College to cater for both football and rugby outside all year round. It will be a tremendous addition to the current Sport TCAT facilities, allowing local clubs to hire it from February.

A number of partner clubs have supported the initiative, including Wrekin Juniors and Admaston Juniors Football clubs. AFC Telford United will also be using the facility to train on over the winter months, with both the first team and youth team using the facility. It is hoped that as we move closer to the London 2012 Olympics, a number of competing countries will use the facility in preparation for the games taking place in the Midlands at the Ricoh Stadium in Coventry.

Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government via Sport England, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 8,000 grants worth more than £420m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £520m.

Colin Walker, Assistant Principal at Telford College of Arts and Technology said “This facility, supported by the Football Foundation, really will be the icing on the cake for Telford College and is a clear message to all those young people who want to develop careers in sport that our College is the place to study, train and play”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “This funding is excellent news for the Telford area. Telford College of Arts and Technology and the County FA deserve credit for their hard work in making this happen.”

Official Launch of TEAM 19 at Telford College http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#21 November 2011 saw the official launch of TEAM 19, an exciting new project which will encourage thousands of 16-19-year-olds studying within Further Education colleges across the country to enjoy the fun of recreational football without leaving their college gates.

The project is being delivered in partnership by British Colleges Sport and The FA, and is supported by Sport England. Over 100 people packed into the stunning facilities at Telford College in Shropshire to be part of the official launch day. Students, players, teachers, parents, volunteers, coaches, County FA and club staff were just some of those in attendance who were treated to a number of inspirational speeches before being able to watch the students from the college compete through their very own in-house “Telford College TEAM 19” league.

Pete Ackerley (FA Senior National Game Development Manager), Karl Lines (BCS National Football Development Manager), Clare Howard (The Association of Colleges) and Janet Ellis (Principal and Chief Executive, Telford College) all spoke passionately about the incredible value of being in a team and the powerful effect that TEAM 19 can have in helping young people to enjoy participating in football. But the real star of the show had to be Telford College student Sarah Nickless, 17, who spoke movingly about the unique experiences that football has given her before encouraging fellow students, across colleges up and down the country to get involved in TEAM 19.

Karl Lines, who project manages the TEAM 19 programme on behalf of BCS and The FA
commented: “It’s great to launch TEAM19 with a bang and so inspirational to hear students like Sarah speak about how highly they value opportunities like these. The best part of this project is that students like Sarah will be involved from the start in leading it and so there is a great deal of excitement for what can be achieved. With this support behind us, we aim to give recreational football in colleges the recognition and profile that it deserves.”

Donna McIvor, The FA National Football Development Manager for Education, believes: “TEAM 19 is about changing the culture of sport in further education, to make it student led, it is about listening to what students want and then supporting them to make it happen. TEAM 19 can not only increase the number of young people playing sport it can also support many of them to develop core skills such as communication, teamwork and leadership that can help them to gain employment in the future.”

The TEAM 19 project works by encouraging colleges to sign up to running a fun and competitive intra-mural or ‘TEAM 19 league’ for their students aged 16-19. Under the exciting TEAM19 branding, colleges can showcase their own college league on the TEAM 19 website, connect with others involved nationwide through the ‘Fan’ site, whilst also competing nationally against other colleges through a ‘virtual’ leader board system each term.

Colleges will be encouraged to fully involve students not just in the playing but also in the organisation, marketing, promotion, refereeing and running of the league through a ‘student management team’ approach, to ensure that students are able to take some ownership for their own provision. ]]>

Telford College and TEAM 19 Encouraging Students into Football http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#22 TEAM 19 in Telford College is instrumental in encouraging students aged 16 to 19 years old from all over the College, male or female, to sign up to fun but competitive football leagues other wise known as Telford College Team 19. The leagues at Telford College run as small sided games and it's all about getting new players playing so you don't have to be the best footballer to win, its about being involved.

The College has a very successful number of TEAM 19 five-a-side leagues running with 2 male leagues every Monday from 12 - 1pm where we have a Premier division and Championship division running along side each other. The Premier male division holds 12 teams each holding 7 players each and the Championship male division holds 13 teams again holding 7 players each, totalling 175 male's players playing football weekly.

Every Friday from 12 - 1pm we run TEAM 19 females where we currently have 4 teams playing all boasting 5 players each. The females change weekly what type of football they play between 5 –a-side and futsal, totalling 20 female's players playing football weekly.

Janet Ellis, Telford College Principal and Chief executive says, "It's a privilege and a pleasure to be part of TEAM19 and a wonderful example of partnership between the College , BCS and the FA"

Colin Walker, Assistant Principal at the College commented, "Telford College is delighted to be at the forefront nationally of Youth Football, particularly in encouraging more young people into the game, as part of the FA's National Game Strategy. The Launch of TEAM 19, highlighted for me the power of football and how collaboratively key stakeholders can help to change young people's lives"

Telford College has a unique programme in place known as the Football Focus Team (FFT) which is made up of 25 students aged 16 to 19 with an interest in football. All the students are part of a scheme called Football Futures which is a programme to recruit, retain, develop, reward and provide a progressive pathway into the skilled football workforce. Unlike no other college, Telford College will provide all students who wish to be part of the FFT with free qualifications including FA Level 1, FA Level 2, FA Module 1, Disability Football, Respect Ambassadors and support them in the Referee qualification amongst others as well as providing them with free kit and support within the community.

The FFT run TEAM 19 leagues at the College and support the College and Community Football Co-ordinator with all fixtures, results and promotion of TEAM 19 then use the volunteer hours they gain to log in their volunteer books.

College and Council Support Local Unemployed Through New Venture http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#19

Telford College and Telford and Wrekin Council are working together to provide help and support to the regions unemployed and those at risk of redundancy.

Prospects Corner is an innovative project that has seen both the College and the Council develop an accessible Employability Centre ideally based within Meeting Point House, located in the heart of Telford Shopping Centre.

The project will focus on co-ordinating existing local support for unemployed people, rather than looking to duplicate or be in competition with existing provision.

As a starting point, the project will use existing employer networks to fill real vacancies and those hard to fill vacancies from Jobcentre Plus.

The heart of this project sees both Telford College and Telford and Wrekin Council looking to proactively raise the economic performance of local companies by ensuring their vacancies are filled as quickly as possible with good quality candidates. They will also address the disadvantages many socially excluded adults face in returning to work by delivering activities where like minded jobseekers can get together and they will look to raise the appropriate employability skills that local people will need to get work and that employers are asking for.

Low Skills go hand in hand with unemployment, low income and deprivation, so an individual’s personal circumstances can be improved by enhancing their skills

As well as providing help, support, courses, information, advice and guidance Prospects Corner will be delivering a range of activities including:

· Work Clubs

· Job Seeking Skills

· CV Writing and Video CV’s

· Interview Techniques

· Redundancy Support

· Business Start Up and Enterprise Support

· Recruitment Support for Employers

Prospects Corner is a centre for those actively seeking work – not a drop in centre for those that are currently unemployed and it runs with the support of key partners that also includes Skills Funding Agency and Jobcentre Plus.

Welding Students Bond with Local Companies http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#18 Approximately 20 adult learners from Telford College have gained employment at GKN Sankey and other local companies since completing the College's 4 week welding course.

Some of the learners had been long term unemployed with little experience in the manufacturing industry and they have expressed sheer delight at gaining employment locally.

Newly employed Simon gave his own time to return to the College to speak with current learners on the course about his employment experience and Alan, who initially failed the course, came back, had further training and passed, said that he was over the moon to now be employed.

Dave Price, Training Manager at GKN said, "We have an excellent working relationship with Telford College, our engineering department also works with the college's young apprentices".

The welding course is 16 hours per week and consists of 12 hours practical welding and 4 hours of employability skills.

For more information on this course or any others, contact Learmer Services on 01952 642237.

Adam's Digging Deep with Telford College http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#17

Adam’s time at school was not a happy one. He had several periods of suspension and eventually exclusion, without having achieved any formal qualifications. This resulted in him having to attend a variety of “Alternative” education projects, none of which suited him or encouraged him to engage.

Eventually, Adam was referred onto the Telford College “Aspire” course in May 2010 by Connexions. Aspire is a 12-week, two day a week course which is designed to re-engage students who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). It includes a mix of class work and out of college visits which encourage teamwork, leadership etc. whilst also helping to develop work and employment skills.

Adam completed the “Aspire” course successfully and, in September 2010, he enrolled on the Foundation Learning “Engage” course. This course helps develop a range of personal qualities and provides a stepping stone onto further training or employment. At the end of the “Engage” course, Adam achieved a variety of vocational qualifications, including Edexcel Workskills and Functional Skills. Adam was nominated for “Student of the Month” midway through the course and, at the end of the year, attended the Telford College Celebration of Work Awards Evening and accepted a Foundation Learning “Student of The Year” Award.

Adam took an active part in the Foundation Learning “Sportability” club and also regularly volunteered to do various land-based activities in the College gardens. Adam’s tutors helped him to find part-time work as a labourer and he was also supported in establishing his own business as a part-time garden landscaper.

In September 2011 Adam successfully enrolled on the full-time “Land-based, Motor-Vehicle and Construction” course.

Partnership Working to Raise Awareness of Mental Health http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#15 South Staffordshire and Shropshire Health NHS Foundation Trust and a partnership of organisations including Telford College have come together to combat the stigma and discrimination that exists around mental health.

The Trust spent time at the College during Mental Health Week in October supported by staff, governors and the Chairman hoping to raise awareness of mental health, challenge stigma and recruit members.

The Trust and the College are committed to ensuring that we all work to combat stigma.

Tackling stigma can help to remove the profound effects that it can have on individuals who are experiencing mental health problems. It helps them get the support they need and helps services to provide responsive and appropriate interventions at the right time.

Tackling stigma and reducing the harm it can have on individuals is the responsibility of us all.

Head Start for Business Administration Students http://www.tcat.ac.uk/news.html#16 Telford College has been giving their full-time Business Administration students a head start in the job market by delivering the NCFE Level 1 Award in Employability Skills. The learners also complete 2 other NCFE qualifications to complement their study – the NCFE Level 1 Award in Personal and Social Development, as well as the NCFE Level 2 Award in Developing Skills for Working in the Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism Industry.

During this academic year the College has also developed a Pre-Employment/Pre-Apprenticeship training programme and offer the NCFE Employability Skills qualification at Level 1 to this cohort of students, who are looking to either gain employment or an apprenticeship.

Elaine Bailey, Programme Manager for Administration and ICT at the College commented, “At Telford College we have a dedicated team of staff who are driven by quality and believe in the importance of the content of this qualification. We have thorough internal moderation standards in place and have received excellent praise from our NCFE External Moderator, who has also been extremely supportive.

As a College we recognise the importance of preparing our students for work as well as providing the academic qualifications required for their chosen career path and we aim to continue to provide this through the Employability Skills qualification. We truly believe the qualification helps develop the learners’ confidence and improves their chances of gaining an apprenticeship or employment.”

The full-time students have worked towards the Business and Customer Awareness unit, the Problem Solving unit, as well as the Job Application and Interview Skills units of the qualification.

The Business and Customer Awareness unit has given the students an insight into business ownership (Sole-traders, Partnership and Limited companies) and the importance of the correct attitude in different situations within a work environment. The Problem Solving unit helped the students to think through how they would deal with problems that they may encounter at work.

The Job Application and the Interview Skills units have given the students the essential skills to enable them to apply for work - creating an effective CV, letter of application and well presented application form, as well as develop the necessary interview skills to enable them to prepare thoroughly for an interview and to understand what factors will enhance or detract from interview performance.
