Thirty Public Services students from Telford College will get a taste of military life when they link up with the Royal Mercian & Lancastrian Yeomanry, a local reserve unit based in Dawley Bank, on Wednesday 9th May for an exciting, hands on morning of activities. This initial collaboration will mark the launch of the brand new ‘Telford College Army Detachment’, a unique and innovative initiative which will create a wide range of exciting new opportunities for current and future students.
Public Services lecturer Archie Walkerdine takes up the story “This is a fantastic opportunity for Telford College to build upon an already excellent working relationship we have with our local reserve unit. The newly formed detachment provides a unique chance for our students to enhance their full time Public Services course with regular interaction with a unit that includes many of its staff from the local area.
Over the forthcoming months full-time Public Service students will have access to a personal development programme, developed and delivered by local Army instructors. Students will participate in a range of activities including map reading, first aid, physical training, modern radio based communications, drill and team building challenges. The course not only supplements the students existing curriculum but also provides them with an additional qualification that is designed to be both a challenging, and fun filled insight into local Army life. It will cumulate with a challenging overnight exercise, where students will be expected to bring together all the elements developed and practised over the previous weeks.
Capt Nick Trevor the Operations support officer for the Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry at Dawley Bank stated “the Regiment is extremely positive about the opportunity to enhance the student experience on their course by adding a real military flavour through the training periods. The intent is to use the different activities to enrich the leadership, teamwork and confidence of all those participating. The learning objectives from the course are; for all the students to complete the course having improved their range of personal skills and gain a positive experience from working in the military environment”.
