Andys Continuing Professional DevelopmentAs part of the Institute of Learnings (IFL) requirement for all teaching practitioners to complete a minimum requirement of thirty hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Telford College tutor Andy McIntyre ensured that he logged any activities that he had completed to count towards his CPD log. The IFL take a random sample of CPD logs from across the country throughout the year, to see how and what teachers and their institutions are logging as Continuing Professional Development. Andy McIntyres CPD log was one that the IFL used in their sample. Andy believes that for his teaching to be vibrant and exciting, and to engage the students fully, having a wealth of experience in his chosen field of Art is essential. It means that he can bring realism to his lectures, and help the subject come alive with his experiences. |

Radios latest competitions Clear the Smoke, in conjunction with Smokefree West Midlands. Kerrang! Radio are inviting entries from people aged between 17 and 24 years old who have a view on smoking and tobacco industry practices. |

Sports Demonstrations at Skills FestivalThe sports facilities at Telford College of Arts and Technology are some of the best in the country, giving all students who are enrolled at the College the opportunity to improve their fitness or take up a new sport through either a dedicated programme of study, for example sports studies, or as part of the College's enrichment programme through the Sports Academy, Sportability, or the initiative to increase student participation in sports. |

Corey and Aaron help to Demonstrate Hair and BeautyTo demonstrate their skills, Beauty Therapy students took their Fake Bake airbrush tanning booth to the Skills Festival, transforming Corey and Aaron, the Telford College Ambassadors. The Beauty Students were not only demonstrating the abilities that they have learned whilst studying at Telford College, but also gave them the opportunity to show prospective students the types of treatments that they could experience in the Revive Salon if they were to study at Telford College. Along side the Fake Bake booth, students were also demonstrating how to apply hair extensions, which are also available through the Revive Salon on campus at Telford College. |

College Lecturer Takes First PrizeAndy MacIntyre, Course Leader for the BTEC National Diploma in Art at Telford College has been awarded first prize in the Telford and Wrekin Open Art exhibition, hosted at The Place, Oakengates. The exhibition was open to anyone from the West Midlands area, with pieces being submitted from Shropshire, Hereford and Staffordshire amongst others. Each artist was able to submit a maximum of two pieces, with a total of 177 pieces being included in the exhibit.

Students Raise Money for Haiti AppealStudents who are part of the Antibullying Network were busy raising money for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal on Friday January 22 2010. In the aftermath of the Haitian Earthquake, which measures 7.0 on the Richter Scale, the densely populated capital of PortauPrince has all but collapsed with little of the original infrastructure remaining. As of yet, there is no official death toll, as there are still survivors being found. One of the biggest concerns of aid workers in the region is the possibility of people suffering, contracting diseases or dying from their injuries following the disaster.

Gateway Students Volunteer at Cottage Care TrustStudents who are currently studying towards their Gateway award through the Directorate of Foundation Studies have followedup their visit in December to Cottage Care Trust in Wellington with a further visit this January. The students and guests at Cottage Care Trust on Haygate Road in Wellington had thoroughly enjoyed their visit before Christmas when the students had made gifts and cards for the guests as part of their volunteering module through their Gateway Award. |

F1 Challenge at the Skills FestivalAs part of their exhibits at the Skills Festival on Wednesday January 27 and Thursday January 28, Telford College of Arts and Technology are challenging visitors to the Skills Festival to take part in the F1 Challenge. The School of Engineering at Telford College of Arts and Technology has established links with the F1 in Schools Challenge to encourage young people to embark on an exciting yet challenging educational experience by designing a balsa wood Formula One car. Secondary school children from across Telford and Wrekin will be invited to take part in the challenge, whose main objections are to change the perceptions of Engineering, Science and Technology, and introduce young people to the exciting challenges that the subjects bring in a fun and interesting way. It is also designed to show young people the different career options in Engineering, Formula One, Science, Marketing and Technology. |

Skills Festival Preparations Underway at Telford CollegeLast January, the external marketing team from Telford College attended the hugely popular Skills Festival at the International Centre to show school children aged between 13 and 16 the different courses that are on offer at Telford College. The Skills Festival has exhibits on show from Telford College, as well as other colleges, training providers and the armed forces to introduce the differences in training after completing compulsory education at school and the opportunities they bring. Telford College is the largest general Further Education in the county, and is more than equipped to provide a challenging, stimulating, and exciting learning programme to meet the educational needs of its students. |

ESOL Students take part in World on a PlateStudents who have been studying English as a second language at Telford College took part in the World on a Plate event held at Madeley Parish Council. 10 of Darshan Bajaj’s students prepared authentic Indian dishes whilst Lynn Anslow's Polish students prepared 10 polish dishes for the event. Darshan and Lynn encouraged their students to participate in the event to give them the opportunity to practice the English that they have been learning. |

Students Raise Money for Neo-Natal Unit
Level three childcare students raised money for Royal Shrewsbury Hospitals' NeoNatal unit with
a Christmas themed event. The students held a cake sale and sold raffle tickets for a Christmas Hamper,
which was won by Anne Jackson from the Learning Resource Centre. The students also took part in face
painting and sang festive songs to add to the festive feel and to encourage people to donate to their
fundraising efforts.

£2000 Raised for British LegionThroughout October and November Terry Anslow, one of Telford College's Trainer/Assessors for Spectator Safety was selling enamel poppy badges both within the College and also at venues where the Spectator Safety team work. The generosity of the staff at the College, and the members of the pubic at the external venues has been phenomenal, with Terry collecting £2000 for the British Legion. The Legion are suitably impressed by the contribution and have issued a certificate to me in recognition of the extreme kindness of the donations received said Terry. The certificate will be on display in the Directorate of Commercial Development and Training. |

Handpainted Silks for sale in time for Christmas
Students on the Arts Enterprise course at Telford College have been working very hard to come up with a range
of handmade products in time for Christmas. The group have designed and hand-painted silk scarves,
handkerchiefs, silk canvases and artists sketchbooks to sell at very reasonable prices.

Operation Christmas ChildEach year in the run up to Christmas, Wendy Taylor, Reprographics Technician at Telford College encourages staff and students to put together a shoe box full of gifts for Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is part of the Samaritan's Purse organisation, and aims to send a shoebox full of small gifts to a child who is in extreme need at Christmastime. |

Midnight Madness Christmas PartyYoung Enterprise Group Midnight Madness hosted an end of term Christmas party for Telford College staff and students to celebrate the end of term on Friday December 11 2009. The party was open to all members of the College community aged 16 and over, and was held at Midnights Nightclub in Wellington. Tickets were available in advance from the College, costing just £5, or on the door for £6. Out of the profits, a donation will be made to Severn Hospice in the New Year. |

Jewellery Sale raises £109.20 for Severn HospiceWith Christmas just around the corner, Lilly-Soo Davies, Learning Resource Assistant at Telford College held a Jewellery Sale for staff and students to buy Christmas gifts and make a donation to Severn Hospice in the process. The jewellery sale took place outside the Learning Resource Centre over two days, and raised £109.20 for Severn Hospice. Elaine Bailey won a pearl necklace from the sale by guessing that there were 250 pearls on the necklace, her guess was the closest as the actual total was 247. |

Students Volunteer at Cottage Care TrustGateway Award Key Skills students decided to volunteer at the Cottage Care Trust this December to complete the volunteering module of their course. The afternoon was completely student led, and tutor Kristy Stuart said that her students did a fantastic job entertaining the day centre visitors. |

CapGemini Apprenticeship SuccessStudents from CapGemini who have been studying towards Apprenticeships through Telford College of Arts and Technology have been celebrating as they have successfully completed their apprenticeship in a record nine months, rather than the allocated two years. The group received their certificates at an award ceremony at International House. |

Introducing Corey and Aaron...College Ambassadors, Corey Barlow and Aaron Doignie have been studying at Telford College now for three years so are more that qualified to introduce new students to the how's and why's of the College. This year they are studying parttime towards a qualification in Swedish Massage, however, the last two years saw them as fulltime students working towards their qualifications in Public Services. Corey and Aaron have also taken courses to become CYQ qualified Gym Instructors and Diplomas in Health, Safety and Secure Working Practices. |

Art and Design Students work with Book Illustrator.Students currently studying towards their BTEC National Certificate in Art and Design had the opportunity to be involved in workshops with Becky Adams, a textile artist and book illustrator/maker. In their workshops, students were able to work alongside Becky Adams, which gave them a unique opportunity to speak to a professional artist in small groups not only learning new techniques, but also being able to learn more about being an artist as a profession. |

Telford College Students Learn About Road SafetyRoad and driver safety is a subject which Telford College are keen to promote to students, especially considering that many of the students have recently passed their driving test or are currently undertaking or thinking about driving lessons. Telford College Student Takes Gold!Jack Stevens came to Telford College after struggling with his school work. Jack was enthusiastic about his schooling, but had struggled to be able to convey his knowledge onto paper. He had been tutored by his Grandfather who was an electronics engineer at a local company, and learned a lot of hands on skills such as electronics, plumbing, filtration systems, building and computing. Jack's hands on approach means that he can fix anything from a computer to a car, but finds it more of a challenge to get the information onto paper. Jack has developed a passion for his College work, which has been reinforced by winning a Gold Medal at a recent World Skills competition in NewcastleuponTyne. The competition was suggested to him by Sue Burke and Robin Brown, who suggested that he had a good chance of succeeding at the competition – however none of them saw him coming away with first place! |

Student Council Holds First MeetingThe Telford College Student Council have held their first meeting of the year today. The council met up at lunchtime to introduce themselves following a successful election campaign. As part of the meeting, Principal Jan Ellis and Chair of Governors Mike Lowe attended the event, as well as Leah Tirmizi from Vinvolved who all spoke the students about how they can make a difference both within the College and the local community. The Student Council has 15 members in total, who are all keen to promote the College, as well as encourage students to become involved in activities and fundraisers for charities. |

New Staff Health Initiative at Telford CollegeStaff at Telford College have had the opportunity to take up a new health initiative in conjunction with Wrekin Primary Care Trust. Staff were invited to take up the challenge of increasing moderate exercise by tracking their progress by using a pedometer. The Pedometer Challenge is a way for staff to start to walk themselves to improved fitness, health and wellbeing. The six week challenge has been designed so that staff can set themselves targets and feel the difference by walking a little bit more each day. |

Mickey Named Sports Personality of the YearBeijing 2008 Paralympic Silver medallist Mickey Bushell was named Sports Personality of the Year at the Engerize Shropshire Telford and Wrekin Awards Evening, the county’s sports partnership in association with Paycare. Mickey was nominated for an award because of his commitment and progression through his sporting career and his goals to take Gold at London 2012. |

Hair and Beauty Students Raise Money for MacmillanStudents from the school of Hair and Beauty at Telford College decided to raise money for the Macmillan charity by offering clients a special offer on a range of Hair and Beauty Treatments. Clients were able to choose three mini treatments including arm and hand massage, nail art, manicure, back massage and wash and blow-dry amongst others, for just £5, alternatively, they could choose a full treatment for a special price of just £5. Raffle tickets were also sold to raise money for the event. The Students raised almost £400 for the Charity, which will help go towards easing the pressure from the lives of cancer suffers and their families. |

Foundation Studies Social Club Opens for Second YearFollowing the success of last year, the Foundation Studies Council opened their Social Club at the start of the academic year. The social club is for students who are both full and part-time in the Directorate of Foundation Studies where they can play a variety of games and socialise with their peers. The social club currently has approximately 50 members, which is ever increasing, who visit the site at Bennetts Bank on a Thursday lunch time. |

Students Prepare a Feast for Local VIP'sSeven students on the Eat and Enjoy course from the Directorate of Foundation Studies at Telford College of Arts and Technology were given the opportunity to prepare and serve a buffet for local councillors and VIP's at the opening of the Wellington Literary Festival 2009. The students arrived at the College at 12 noon on Saturday October 3 2009 to make the buffet before changing into their chef whites, loading up the minibus and driving the short distance to Wrekin College. When they arrived at Wrekin College, they arranged their table cloths and displayed their food according to sweet or savoury dishes, and ensured they were presented in an attractive way. |

Foundation Studies Induction DaysStudents from the Directorate of Foundation Studies had the opportunity to take part in a variety of induction events to ease them back into College life after the summer. Some of the students were new to Telford College, whilst others have returned to gain more skills and qualifications and to reunite with old friends. |

Drivers to Complete Certificate of Professional CompetenceNew legislation, which fully came into force in September 2009, means that all drivers of both PCV and LGV.s must complete 35 hours of training over a five year period through continuing professional development to ensure that they have the necessary training and qualifications to drive safely on UK roads. The mandatory Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is designed to provide ongoing vest practice training to the driving industry, ensuring that all drivers are up to date with the latest practices, regulations and technology to ensure that they are not only both driving safely and legally, but also up to date with customer services and disability awareness. The courses are designed and agreed with employers, and can cover a range of topics including Health and Safety, Driving Safety, Customer Services and Disability Awareness. |

Telford College's Security Team Gain Level 2 Qualification.Encouraging staff to take additional courses to further their education and skills is one of the things that Telford College are proud to offer their staff. All staff are encouraged to study a variety of courses both on and off site in areas that will broaden their knowledge and experience. NVQ's Prove to be a Success in the Community.Many local individuals have gained NVQ Qualifications recently through Telford College of Arts and Technology's Directorate of Commercial Development and Training. National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ') are a nationally recognised certificates that can also prove to be an excellent motivational tool for employees who wish to further their chosen career as it gives them a qualification that confirms their present standard of performance and knowledge in the workplace. The College's aim is to work hand in hand with the employer and the candidate to meet the criteria expected to complete the qualification. The NVQ Level 2 Award can at present be fully funded under Train to Gain provided certain criteria of candidates are met. |

Engaging Students at Telford College.A brand new course is being offered at Telford College of Arts and Technology to students who want to further their education and training, but didn’t get the exam results they had hoped for at school. Engage is an exciting new course, where the student will have the opportunity to gain at least five nationally recognised qualifications, and work on a full-time programme of study. There are plenty of progression routes open to students who are successful on this course. The Engage programme involves personalised learning, so the student and tutor will devise a programme of study that is most suited to both the student’s strengths and interests. The course is a one year course, and will require four days of study a week. Students may also be eligible to get financial assistance through the EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) of up to £30 a week. |

Harold says Goodbye...Harold Taylor, a tutor who has been teaching Woodwork and Woodturning courses for over 20 years is handing up his lathe for the last time. Harold first set up his woodwork class at the Greenwood Trust sixteen years ago, with two of the students who were in his final class. The class has turned more into a club said Harold. |

Mark Underwood enrolled on a National Voluntary Pathfinder programme at Telford College of Arts
and Technology following a referral from Telford Job Centre after he had been unemployed for six
months. Little did Mark realise how much the course would benefit his future! The staff
at the Job Centre Plus were great said Mark They introduced me to this new government
initiative and felt it would be of benefit to me, and they were right!

September Information EveningInformation and Enrolment Sessions are taking place at Telford College of Arts and Technology on Monday September 7, Tuesday September 8 and Saturday September 12. On Monday and Tuesday the sessions are from 5pm . 8pm in the Sports Hall at Sport TCAT, and on Saturday the session is from 10.30am 1.30pm in the main building. Staff will be on hand througout the sessions for advice and guidance on courses, and to answer any College related queries. |

A Golden Opportunity for CatherineCatherine Cooper's life changed when she had to take early retirement from teaching in the Primary sector for twentynine years, due to ill health. Catherine was determined to use the time that she now had to fulfil a lifelong dream of having a book published. She decided to draw on the many years experience she had in teaching, and the books that her pupils would regularly read to create an extraordinary magical adventure surrounding the life of Jack Brenin. |
