In our simulated environment students learn how to overcome a variety of physical and sensory impairments by experiencing the difficulties of disabilities and impairments through specialist equipment.
Students will experience what it is like to suffer from the various conditions and complaints which affect the
elderly such as arthritis and visual impairment by wearing 'age suits' and 'goggles'. They will
have the opportunity to learn about how older people's lives are influenced by people who support them in
their day to day lives.
These roles can include dietitians, community nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists amongst others.
Students will learn how important it is that older people have help and support to make their lives easier. The day
will involve some empathy training using the age suits to make students understand how difficult simple tasks can be
with the progression of age and age related illnesses.
The students will have the opportunity to undertake tasks with healthcare professionals to find out how their jobs
help the lives of older people.
The Care of Older People scenario is suitable for up to 15 learners. It covers units within the Health and Social
Care curriculum and Biology whilst the causes and effects of a heart attack and the job roles covered also make it
highly relevant for Citizenship and PSHE.
