Telford College Sport Abilty

photo of the Sports Academy

The idea of developing a Sports academy at Telford College was discussed in early 2002 when a local PE teacher and the then Team leader for sport at Telford College explored the notion of offering high quality sport to a number of young people within the Telford area. The rest as they say is history- the Academy was formerly launched at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in September 2003 with a focus on 4 particular sports Football (Male and female),Basketball (Male and Female), Rugby (Male) and Ice Hockey(Male). The academy has moved on and Netball (Female) now replaces Ice Hockey and that local P E Teacher – Paul Young has been in post for 8 Years in his role as Director of the Sports Academy.

One of the long term aims of the academy has been to promote, where appropriate, positive opportunities in respect of sport for people with learning or physical disabilites. Sportability has already changed lives by promoting a culture that responds to the needs of individuals and groups taking account of their Physical ,intellectual, social, emotional behaviour and economic wellbeing. This is a ground breaking initiative that continues to enhance the national reputation that the TCAT Sports Academy already enjoys. A number of lunchtime clubs run by a dedicated team of staff have contributed significantly to the launch and sustainability of the “Sportability” programme which now underpins a vibrant and full curricular sports delivery.
