In September 2008 British Colleges Sport in partnership with the FA officially launched the FOCUS College programme.Telford College was absolutely delighted to be selected as one of the first nine named Focus Colleges this was a fantastic honour for the college and The Sports Academy. The award of Focus College status is an accolade of which every member of The Academy team is justifiably very proud.
A Focus College is a college that has been targeted to receive an enhanced level of support by the partners in order to develop a high quality and sustainable football development programme. Ten colleges are hand-selected each academic year to be a part of the programme and the process will work across the fouryear national strategy. It's a great accolade to be one of ten colleges nationally to be identified by BCS and the FA as a national leader in football development provision.
In partnership with BCS and the FA, the Focus College will put together a 4&year football development strategy to implement within the college. The college will undergo quarterly meetings and will receive focused support from myself and their County FA in order to implement and review this strategy. The strategy will be devised and targets set up to 2012 and the college will receive support across the four years to ensure the strategy is working effectively.
Those colleges interested in putting themselves forward for this programme should really show positive evidence of how they have delivered against a football development project and engaged with BCS throughout this process. One example is those colleges who have delivered a Step into Sport programme for their students, worked proactively with BCS (and their County FA) and shown some great examples of good practice along the way. BCS are really looking for colleges who have a positive attitude towards sport development and working within community sport, a staff infrastructure in place to support development, i.e. teaching staff with time for development of sport programmes, and nonteaching staff with focus on sport and the resources in place to drive their progression as a college within football.
