NHS Gloucestershire Testimonies

As part of the on–going staff training programmes at Gloucester NHS, Damon Crute, an Assessor/Trainer for the Directorate of Commercial Development at Telford College of Arts and Technology, supported a cohort of transport drivers through their NVQ Level 2 in Carry & Deliver Goods starting in spring 2010. The Carry and Deliver NVQ Level 2 is aimed at Drivers of vans or HGVs whose job role involves multi–drop deliveries and customer interaction. The candidates must complete 7 units in order to obtain the qualification. The units include; demonstrating the ability to work effectively with colleagues and customers, planning routes and the delivery and collection of goods and materials.

Damon Crute writes:

'The driving team is headed by Clive Dawson who gave his full support to those undertaking the qualification, all of whom displayed a high level of enthusiasm, respect and enjoyment of the course. Each candidate also appreciated the value of the NVQ, principally citing the opportunity to consolidate their existing competency and to receive formal recognition of their professionalism in their day to day roles.'

Feedback received from the candidates has overall been very positive. The candidates have said they found Damon very supportive and he explained the award well so they had a good idea of what to expect. One staff member said 'It made me think about the job, and about the tasks we do automatically day to day'. Another staff member stated they will use the award as a 'stepping stone' for future development.

Clive Dawson who is Transport manager for the Trust writes:

'Firstly I would like to congratulate all the transport services team who have completed their NVQ level 2. I was approached by the Lifelong Learning Team who asked if any staff would be interested in enrolling on the NVQ course, at first this was met with a degree of scepticism, however once we met with them and explained that this course would be undertaken during working hours and that it involved on the job training and assessment they were keen to enrol. The NVQ course has given many of them the opportunity to develop their skills to a higher level. Following on from this many have found the confidence to undertake other courses that are available to them. This is something as a department we have tried to encourage and support.'
